Very good season, and the team can be proud.  We tipped our cap to no one.   We were as good as any team in the league.   Some very good things to note:  95 stolen bases with only 4 caught stealing, a .326 team batting average. Some not so good things to note:  38 errors,,, almost three a game, and 99 strike outs about 7.5 a game.  Individual notes of merit:   Two hitters well over .400, Matt Snyder and Tyler Watkins.  Roman Incorvia striking out only 3 times all year, and Tyler Greggs playing errorless centerfield for the season.  The most noteworthy aspect that we should be proud of is that we draw from the smallest area of any of the 16 teams in the league, and I sincerely believe we play the best baseball.  We are not always the most talented, but we play the best fundamental baseball.  This you can contribute to one thing: hard work.  A group of boys who worked as hard, and probably harder than any other, and the results showed, in small things like proper backups, pick-offs, players simply being in the right place, doing the right thing.  We were far from perfect, but I, who give out praise sparingly, say "JOB WELL DONE"

And the good news is the cupboard is not bare.  Our outfield comes back in tact, and should prove to be a solid unit.   Turk did a solid job at first,
seldom making mental mistakes, and he learned how to dance.   Incorvia played a solid second making only two errors on the year, excellent for a
middle infielder.  Murray is a bulldog catching and as his arm grows stronger he will become a very solid backstop.  Our hitting will miss Matt, Brad and TJ, but with Watkins and Turk leading the way, we should be strong.  I look for Wilson to develop into a weapon at the lead off spot.  He is a left hander with speed, and when his confidence kicks in,,, look out.   Jordan Incorvia played for us one game this year, and he put me in mind of a young Keith Stellman, quiet and sure.  I like his demeanor, and his desire to learn.  I will not be at all surprised to see him starting at shortstop for us next year.   Pitching is our only point of concern, but we have the arms.  Greggs throws well, and Incorvia is our most consistent 13 year old.  We hope to develop a left hander, and have several prospects to pick from.   I look for good things.  We did not lose a home game all year, and only one in the past two years.  People will soon start dreading coming to Cooperstown, and that is as it should be.

Special thanks to Matt Snyder, Brad Vincent, and TJ McElhaney for two years of effort and good results.  Matt and Brad were our pitching stalwarts the past two years, and TJ became the best third baseman in the league.  I hope you all go on and play high school ball.   I will enjoy following your careers.

My thanks to Kevin Early, And Zinz, and Jacob Greggs as coaches this season. This may well be Kevin's last year as he has now graduated and is looking for a job.  He plans on teaching and wants to be a baseball coach,,,, imagine that.   Thank you to Mr. Watkins for keeping score, the borough for keeping the field well maintained.  Thank you to Deb Watkins for our refreshments sales.  WE now have team jackets, orange and black, and really sharp, thanks to her efforts.  And a special thanks to Patty McElroy who had to endure my guff when things were not quite as I wanted them.

Vernon 3 0 0 0 0 X X 3 5 4
Cooperstown 2 5 4 7 X X X 18 16 1

Cooperstown Junior League played with hot bats, consistent pitching and steady defense and proved to be too much for visiting Vernon last night.
Scoring in every inning Cooperstown overcame an early 3-0 deficit enroute to an 18-3 victory.  Every batter in the lineup hit safely with Matt Snyder and Tyler Watkins leading the way with 3 hits.  TJ McElhaney, Roman Incorvia, Zac Murray each added two, while Brad Vincent, Nick Turk, Tyler Greggs, and Nate Wilson chipped in with one.  Matt Snyder picked up his fifth victory of the year, and Roman pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

Coach's Comment:  A little shaky in the first, but the team successfully stopped the bleeding and rebounded.   Our last home game and we ended undefeated here in the league.  And Nick Turk hit the fairest foul home run I have ever seen.   One more practice, one more game, and we are probably all ready for a break...but a week from now I will be missing it.

Meadville DQ 0 0 0 0 2 X X 2 4 3
Cooperstown 1 0 9 3 X X X 13 11 3

Cooperstown pushed its junior league record to 8-2-1 with a home victory over Meadville Dairy Queen 13-2 Friday evening.  Scoring nine runs in the third inning to break the game open Cooperstown won its 4th ten run game of the year.  Nick Turk led the hit parade with a double and a single and 4 RBIs.  Tyler Watkins, Roman Incorvia, and Brad Vincent each added two safeties, while Matt Snyder doubled and Nate Wilson & TJ McElhaney both singled.  Brad Vincent picked up his third win of the season with a complete game 4 hitter.

Coach's Comment:   The visiting umpire walking off the field commented on our team this evening.  He said we are a very nice ball team, solid from top to bottom.  To a coach that is kind of like a home run.  You just feel good.  And to the team they should also, each boy knowing he is part, and an important part.  We just need this type of effort consistently. We still can be as solid as oatmeal sometimes.  But tonight is not a night for worrying about what might be, it is a night of enjoying what was.  One thing I as a coach am very proud of is their growing loyalty toward each other, toward the team.   Tonight kudos to Roman on his best game of the year, and Zack on his hustle, he threw two runners out, one on a hustling backup and the other on a steal of second.  I told Zack early on that we would be as good a team as he is a catcher.  That is a lot to put on a young man, true or not.  But to his credit he is responding.

Cooperstown 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 6 2
Harmonsburg 2 0 0 0 0 0 X 2 4 2

The Cooperstown Junior League team dropped only its second game of the season 2-1 at Harmonsburg Saturday morning.   Harmonsburg scored two in the first off starter Brad Vincent with a double, single and two walks.   A legitimate steal of home accounted for the second run.  After that Vincent and Snyder shut them down for the rest of the game, facing only one batter over the minimum.  Cooperstown threatened often getting runners in scoring position in six of the seven innings, but only being able to plate one, when Snyder singled and Vincent in the 5th.   Vincent and Snyder each had two hits, while Turk and Incorvia each added one. Vincent took the loss, his first of the season, yielding two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four.  Snyder pitched the final three, yielding one hit no walks, and also striking out four.

Coach's Comment:   A decent game against the best pitcher we have seen all year.  He over matched a couple of our hitters, but for the most part we battled him very hard.  I take responsibility for the second and decisive run.  I have not taught my catcher to move forward as he received that pitch as the batter can not swing without endangering the runner.  WE played well defensively.  The infield was solid, and we turned a very nice 4-6-3 double play with the runner stealing, which meant that the shortstop had to hang tough, and he did. Nate Wilson made a fine running catch in right field.   There are just so many ifs in a game like that.  If Nick Turk's drive is fair in the first it is a two run homer, if the left fielder does not make a catch on Greggs' ball that he seemed fortunate to make, if I had called the pick off play one pitch earlier.  But as Coach Noll said, "if stands for I failed."  WE had chanced and did not get the big hit.  I am proud of the effort, and if we can continue to play defensively at that level we are on our way to becoming a very nice baseball team.

Cooperstown hosted an undefeated Conneaut Lake team and came away with a 2-2 tie in an extra inning game called on account of darkness.   Cooperstown jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one with singles by T. J. McElhaney and Matt Snyder put runners on 1st and 2nd. T.J. scored when the shortstop mishandled a hard hit grounder by Nick Turk. Roman Incorvia then hit a smash at the third baseman who fielded it cleanly and was able to double Matt off second.  In the third Cooperstown pushed the lead up to 2-0 when McElhaney again singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Turk.   Conneaut Lake then tied the game in the fourth when it turned two walks two hits and an error into 2 runs; that was it for the night. TJ and Matt Snyder each had two hits, while Turk and Tyler Watkins each added one. Brad Vincent started and went four innings yielding two runs, both earned, on three hits, while walking two and striking out 5.  Matt Snyder pitched four innings of hitless relief, but walked 5 while striking out seven.

COACH'S COMMENT:   It was two good teams and a decent ball game.  We feel we should have won it, and I am sure they do also.  Vincent showed some toughness on the mound, and that is a plus.  Snyder did his usual fine job, but his control needs to sharpen.  We had nine strikeouts, and that is too many, but we held a good team to two runs.   It is not satisfying, but not devastating either.   We need a spark, a leader, someone who just refuses to lose -- and right now we don't have that person.  We have some good ball players, but no one who grabs hold of the team and runs with it.

Cooperstown 0 6 1 8 1 5 X 21 14 4
Cochranton 0 1 8 1 1 1 X 11 4 4

Cooperstown upped its record to 6-1 with a 21-11 win over homestanding Cochranton in Junior League play.  Using a very solid offensive in which every member of the team scored at least twice, Cooperstown was able to overcome an 8 run third inning by Cochranton.  Cooperstown used a well balance attack lead by Matt Snyder and  Tyler Watkins who both singled twice and doubled.  Roman Incorvia and Nick Turk each added two hits, while Tyler Greggs doubled, and Nate Wilson & Nick Montgomery each added a hit.  Brad Vincent picked up his second win of the campaign and Matt Snyder got the save with a solid no hit three innings.

COACH'S COMMENT:  There is an old adage in football that offense wins fans and defense wins championships.   This can also be said of baseball, especially at this level.  If you can make the other team hit three base hits to get a run you are going to win a lot of ball games.  We are a long way from there; this is the second sloppy game in a row.  Offensively we are clicking.  We have five slots in our order hitting over .300, two .500 or better and that is going to score some runs, but we are one good hot pitcher away from being beaten.  We need to be able to hold the other team down, and you can't do that with walks and errors.  Positives in the game:  we picked three runners off of third base, each time ending an inning.  That is big. Matt Snyder was big in relief and kept his poise when there was reason not to. "Tippy" Watkins had a great night offensively, getting three solid two strike hits.

Richmond 0 0 0 1 0 X X 1 2 6
Cooperstown 3 5 5 0 X X X 13 8 1

Homestanding Cooperstown scored early and often to back  a solid pitching performance by Matt Snyder and Roman Incorvia  for a 13-1 win over Richmond in Junior League action this evening.  Nick Turk got things rolling with a 2-run triple in the first, scoring himself on an overthrow.   Cooperstown added five runs in the second highlighted by Tyler Greggs first homer of the year, and added five more in the third with TJ McElhaney's RBI double the big hit of the inning. McElhaney and Turk both had two hits on the night, while Greggs, Brad Vincent, Snyder, and Incorvia each added one.  Snyder picked up his second win of the campaign going three shutout innings. Incorvia making his first pitching appearance was strong in relief.

COACH'S COMMENT:  Well we won, and we won handily, but the sharpness was not there.  We made too many mental mistakes that do not show up on scoresheets. Last game I saw a team starting to come into their own, but tonight I saw less.  We are a work in progress, the key word being "work", and when the work stops the progress stops.  I am proud of how far this team has come, but we are far from where we need to go.

Meadville VFW 2 2 4 2 0 X X 10 8 3
Cooperstown 2 2 6 1 2 X X 13 12 3

Cooperstown Junior League avenged its only loss of the season last night with a 13-10 victory over visiting Meadville VFW.   In an offensive struggle Cooperstown rallied back three times from deficits to take the win.  Brad Vincent started the game but control and a weak defense hampered and shortened his outing.  Matt Snyder relieved with much the same problems, but held on to attain his third win of the season against only one loss. Matt also led the hit parade for Cooperstown hitting four singles, and T.J. McElhaney added three.  Tyler Watkins doubled and Brad Vincent, Nick Turk, Roman Incorvia, and Nick Montgomery added to the balanced attack with singles.

COACH'S COMMENT:  It was a terrible night for baseball; wet and cold.  And the week off due to rain was apparent in both teams.  A fitting description uttered by one of the team: "WE WERE AWFUL, BUT THEY WERE AWFULLER", (hey...he's a baseball player, not an English major) kind of fit. Anytime your pitching gets hit hard and lacks control you worry a bit, but I think the mound conditions and rubber spikes may have played a part in it, as both teams pitching suffered the same fate.  Our outfield needs work.  They pass off as hits on the score sheet, but there were three fly balls that needed to be caught.  On the positive side our base running was aggressive and smart, and two players pressed into starts at new positions, Roman at catcher and Nick Montgomery at 2b did admirably.   Now if it will just dry up so we can work on things...

Cochranton 1 0 0 0 0 X X 1 2 2
Cooperstown 2 0 6 2 1 X X 11 8 1

Brad Vincent pitched a complete game two hitter yielding only one unearned run as Cooperstown rolled over visiting Cochranton in Junior League action.  Vincent struck out 6 while walking two while picking up his first win of the year.  Cooperstown broke open a tight game with a six run  third and never looked back, getting some clutch two out hits from Roman Incorvia, Tyler Greggs, Tyler Watkins, and Nate WilsonTyler Greggs led the Cooperstown attack with two safeties, Vincent, TJ McElhaney, Nick Turk, Incorvia, Watkins, and Wilson chipped in with one.

COACH'S COMMENT:   It was very important to us that the other bats in the lineup kicked in.  Zack Murray and  Matt Snyder have been carrying us on their backs, but both were shut down tonight, and the other boys picked it up.  Our defense was top drawer, turning two double plays, and Tyler Watkins making a fine running catch in left.  And Brad pitching a complete game may pay dividends later as we rested Matt Snyder's arm which has been giving him some problems.  A good outing, and we can feel proud of it...but tomorrow is another day.

Meadville VFW 2 0 2 2 0 0 X 5 4 3

Cooperstown lost its first Junior League game of the season at Meadville this evening suffering a 5-3 defeat.  Cooperstown kept pounding at the door in the late innings, but failed to get the timely hit stranding 12 runners throughout the game.  Matt Snyder lead Cooperstown hitting with three safeties, TJ McElhaney added singles.  Matt Snyder took the defeat though yielding only two earned runs in three innings of work.  Brad Vincent finished out the game yielding one run in the final three innings.

COACH'S COMMENT:  Any time you put crooked numbers up in the error column of your score sheet you only have yourself to blame.  We played one very poor inning and that was the difference in the game.  On the positive side were two well executed plays, a 4-6-3 double play that was really big in the first inning when things were threatening to fall apart, and a relay from Tyler Greggs through Brad Vincent to Zack Murray that nailed a runner at the plate trying to score from second on a single to center.  In the hitting department we took some baby steps in the right direction.  I was very proud the way we battled in the last inning getting the tying runs on base, only to fall short.  We had three very positive at bats that inning when the chips were down by Nick Turk, TJ McElhaney, and Roman Incorvia.  This is something to build on.

On April 26th, the Cooperstown junior league baseball team won its season opener against Meadville Rotary. The team sponsored by Jackson Township won with a score of 8 to 3.  The tight game opened up in the 6th inning with 4 runs being scored by Jackson Township.  Matt Snyder recorded a double while Brad Vincent and Zack Murray each had two singles. Nate Montgomery rounded out the teams six hits with a single. Outstanding outfield defense by Tyler Watkins and Tyler Greggs and infield defense by third baseman T.J. McElhaney aided the team in keeping the opponents score low.  Snyder was awarded the win as pitcher while Vincent and Greggs were scoreless in relief.
